On October 4, our school hosted a writers workshop that brought together students, alumni, and parents for a cozy and inspiring morning all about storytelling. Because of my busy schedule, I attended the opening keynote session and one of my favorite workshops.

The opening keynote speaker was Anne Michaels, the Poet Laureate of Toronto and author of Fugitive Pieces. She shared from her newest book, Held, and even read parts of it to us. Her writing is the kind that makes the whole room go quiet — every word felt alive. Our principal, Ms. Perry, had a wonderful conversation with Anne that really opened my eyes to how creativity works in writing.

The workshop speaker was Amy Stuart, who presented “Start to Finish: Storytelling”. She talked about what it’s really like to write — the ups and downs, writer’s block, and how hard it can be to find time to sit down and actually write. I loved how honest she was about the process and how she reminded us that writing doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to start.

The morning couldn’t have been better: great conversations, inspiring words, and wonderful cookies. I even bought two of Anne’s books, Fugitive Pieces and Held, and I can’t wait to start reading them.

It was one of those mornings that makes you fall in love with writing all over again.
