I used to think cheating was supposed to be hidden. At camp, I learned it could happen in plain sight and still make everyone look away.

While we stared at our Google Docs, rewriting sentences about Frankenstein, one classmate had a faster routine. He had ChatGPT open beside his assignment: prompt, paste, repeat. People glanced at his screen, then looked away. So did I. I kept hoping a teacher would notice first because I didn’t want to be the one who ratted him out.

After waiting longer than I liked, I said enough for a teacher to understand. I expected relief, but instead felt exposed. Everyone else had stayed quiet; I had only made the silence visible.

Reading “Student Cheating Is Becoming Impossible to Detect in an A.I. Era,” I realized the article was not just about students hiding final answers. It was about tools that fake the process of learning: polished writing, humanizers, and fabricated revisions. At camp, my classmate did not bother with the disguise. The ChatGPT tab sat open beside the assignment. 

What disappeared was not the evidence. It was our willingness to answer for what we saw. While we waited for a teacher to notice, we could pretend the decision was not ours. Speaking up would turn what we had witnessed into an accusation made by one of us. Silence was easier, and because everyone chose it, no one had to feel responsible.

The problem was not invisibility. It was that we saw it and still left responsibility to someone else.
